ISO 9000 is a series of standards which addresses the quality management system of an organization. It does not specify which types of quality systems, but it does require that management have specific quality goals and a system to implement and monitor those quality goals. In order to gain ISO 9000 certification, which is established by the International Organization of Standardization, a company should have work procedures in place to help ensure the quality goals. Certification of adherence to those quality objectives can be issued by an organization that has been accredited by the International Organization of Standardization. Certification will help convince consumers that a company’s products are of high quality.

Occupational health and safety already is a legal requirement in several countries. Others have established such a system but the application is still optional. Risk management plays an important role when performing occupational health and safety. It serves to identify and assess the risks derived from the hazards. It finally leads to appropriate action to reduce or even eliminate such risks. Risk management is the critical success factor in occupational health and safety.

The management system provides the framework for the process of identifying hazards, assessing associated risks, taking action and reviewing the outcome. Like any modern management system it conforms to the kind of management system as it was developed for quality management (ISO9000). Hence, the occupational health and safety management system simply has to be integrated into the existing management systems.
