The internet has opened a lot of opportunities for people around the globe. Nowadays, you can easily get virtually anything in a matter of days without the trouble of searching for items that seem more like a treasure hunt. There are also a number of things you need to be cautious about online. Several dishonest individuals are waiting for opportunities to get more out of the newbie. Here are some tips to stay safe.

1. Search the right places
There are now thousands of web sites on the internet where you can get anywhere from shoes to chandeliers. Multiple sites will also offer various features, prices and quality depending on your taste and their expertise. Check the background of the web site first and determine if it is worthwhile to invest in. Read the content and look for previous client reviews to find out how they do business. It is also recommended that you ask for sources from people you know who have actually ordered. This way, you can measure the advantages and disadvantages.

A good web site to buy from includes customer services wherein you can ask questions and raise all your concerns. You will most likely talk with some via email or the telephone. Make sure that source is reliable by asking for certification as well, especially if you’re looking for medications and other expensive items like unique wall clocks.

2. How to Pay
Determine the method of payment when purchasing. Ask how the products will be delivered and if the web site offers any guarantee should the items become damaged during shipping. Ask about the shipping company and the number of days you should expect the package to arrive. Some of the most common payment methods include money transfer, credit card and PayPal. Setting up a PayPal account is very easy and allows you to purchase from several reliable sources quickly, with extra protection on your money.

3. Quality Matters
Make sure that you are getting the present item you see on the internet. You may ask for more details about the product, as well as extra photos to ensure that the quality is right and that the goods are in perfect condition. I make it a point to ensure at least a 30-day warranty for almost any item I purchased. This will help in getting your purchase in flawless condition. Some times the price may be higher but you can be certain that the goods are authentic.

4. Personal Information
Get the fullname of the seller. Watch out for signs of unscrupulous activity such as hesitance in the part of the seller to provide full information about himself. It is also a red flag if the seller cannot say much about the product or gives you wrong information. Do your research by studying the items and comparing the details with the ones the site is giving you.

For me “How to Pay” is most important. I do not have credit cards thus I try to search for either net banking or offline payments system like DD and cheque. I also use PayPal for more secure transition.
I advice my friends to buy only from well known sellers.

My wife had her numbers stolen two months ago and someone was using them to buy gas in Mexico. It is crazy out there, so your advice is timely.
    Thanks friend,

One of the most important things to watch out for is Phishing scams, where they send you an email from what looks to be say, ebay or paypal, but it is infact a link to a fake login form that will steal your password once you enter it

always be sure to check the link that you are clicking on in the emails!!

I heard several years ago that paying with a credit card over the internet is safer than doing so over the phone. I wonder if this is really true?

I’m pretty wary of any smaller business that doesn’t take paypal. Otherwise, I just have to ask myself if I really need it.

Great info! And it’s only gonna get worse! The scams and such that is…

I’ve been buying/selling online for quite a few years and do most of my shopping etc etc online.. I can’t imagine NOT doing that sort of thing online.

So many people are scared to type their name in on the internet, much less any other personal info!

Education is what’s needed! I work on computers on the side as well as the internet marketing thing.. and it’s amazing to me how many people just don’t have a clue!

Like I said, education and this post is very educational!
    Good job!
